Fire pits can be a fantastic addition to your backyard, acting as a focal point for gatherings and providing warmth on chilly nights. If you’re considering adding a fire pit to your yard, check out our tips for building and maintaining a fire pit.
Building the Fire Pit
Start by choosing the right location. Look for a flat, level area at least ten feet away from structures or trees. Before building a fire pit check local regulations and obtain any necessary permits.
When selecting building materials, remember that they need to stand up to intense heat. Use fire-resistant materials like fire bricks for the interior, and heat-resistant materials for the exterior of the fire pit. Avoid materials that retain moisture, such as pea gravel or river rock, as they can explode under extreme heat.
What to Burn
Burning wood is the best choice for you and your fire pit. Other materials such as trash or accelerants like gasoline can be harmful to your health, and may even damage your fire pit.
Maintaining the Fire Pit
Keep your fire pit in good working order by regularly cleaning out the ashes. Ashes can corrode the metal tools you use in the firepit, so remove them and place them in a metal ash bucket. When the ashes are completely cool, place them in a plastic trash bag and dispose of them.
